Gyting, fredning og regler

Når de vanligste artene gyter, og hvor du finner reglene som gjelder.

When fish spawn they gather in particular places and are often easy to catch. That is why many species are protected during spawning in some places or at some times. The rules differ between waters, so always check what applies where you fish.

Rough spawning times in Sweden

  • Pike: early spring, just after the ice goes, in shallow, weedy places.
  • Perch: spring, when the water reaches about 8–10 degrees. The eggs are laid in strings on reeds and branches.
  • Zander: late spring to early summer. The male guards the nest.
  • Trout and salmon: autumn, on gravel beds in running water.
  • Grayling: spring, in running water.
  • Whitefish and char: autumn and early winter.

Spawning times shift with climate and latitude. In the north spawning can come several weeks later than in the south.

Why closed seasons?

A spawning fish is at its most vulnerable. It gathers in a few places, often shallow, and sometimes takes a lure out of sheer aggression. If the big spawners are taken, a stock can weaken quickly, since they give the most and strongest offspring. The closed season lets the stock carry on, and that is what makes there be fish to catch next year.

Respect the spawning grounds

  • Do not wade across gravel beds in running water in autumn and winter. That is where trout and salmon eggs lie, and they cannot stand being trodden on.
  • Avoid shallow spawning bays by boat in spring, even where fishing there is allowed.
  • Release fish full of roe or milt when you can, even when you may keep them.

Where do I find the rules?

  • The fishing licence: the association's own rules, such as minimum sizes, bag limits and protected areas, are on the licence and in Finnegas under the water.
  • The Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management and Svenska fiskeregler have the national and regional rules, especially for the coast and the large lakes.
  • If there is a catch report for your licence, please fill it in. It helps the association look after the fishing.

When in doubt, release the fish gently. Read more in Catch and release with care.
