Who was Finnegas?
The story of a fisherman, a salmon and all the world’s knowledge.
A fish worth years of waiting
Finnegas, also known as Finn Eces, is a poet and wise man in Irish legend. Here, though, it is his fishing that draws us in. Year after year, he tried to catch one extraordinary fish: the Salmon of Wisdom.
This catch carried an astonishing promise. According to the legend, whoever ate the salmon would gain all the world’s knowledge. For Finnegas, fishing meant more than food or a big fish. Beneath the surface lay the answer to everything.
At last, a catch
Only after the young Fionn mac Cumhaill became his pupil did Finnegas catch the salmon. After years of waiting, the fish was finally out of the water. Fionn was given the task of cooking it.
While cooking, Fionn burned his thumb and put it in his mouth. In doing so, he received the fish’s knowledge. The wisdom passed to the pupil. In the legend, Fionn could access it again by putting his thumb in his mouth.
What a fish can teach us
The legend promises everything: eat the fish and gain all the world’s knowledge. In our fishing, we learn little by little. A catch, a weather note and a day by the water can offer the next clue. That is where the name Finnegas meets what we want to gather here: fishing and what it teaches us.
